STRUCTURED EXERCISE: IS YOUR DOG GETTING ENOUGH?

It is no secret that we all love our dogs, right? This means that we naturally want our dogs to be the best version of themselves. But how do we do that? In order for our dogs to be the best version of themselves we MUST provide them with what they need to thrive.

Structured exercise is one of the key components in our dog's health, well-being, and mental state. What exactly is structured exercise?

Structured exercise is any type of exercise with a goal or purpose in mind!

Let's look at a few examples of what structured vs. un-structured looks like.

Structured: A nicely paced walk where your dog must heel, focus, and match your pace.

Un-structured: A walk with tons of stopping, waiting, sniffing and slowing down.

Structured: A quick game of fetch.

Un-structured: 10 minutes of free time in the backyard.

Structured: Balancing on objects and practicing obedience at the park

Un-structured: Aimlessly exploring the park

More examples of structured exercises include:

Urban Mushing

Agility

Flirt Pole

Spring Pole

Jogging/Biking

Treadmill (YES you can teach your dog to walk on the treadmill!)

Obedience for mental exercise

Many people are unaware of the difference/impact adding structured exercise to their dog's life will make. If you are one of those people that hasn't been giving your dog structured exercise, I highly recommend you give it a try! The best way to start out would be to teach your dog a nice heel command so that you can easily take a short structured walk each day.

Think you don't have time? Try waking up a little earlier or staying up a few minutes later. Also, start slow! You can start by taking a 10 minute brisk walk and build on that. 10 minutes is much better than nothing and it will make a difference!
